This is what is known as “mindfulness practice”.</image:title>

Before eating, notice how your body feels, what do your thoughts sound like regarding the food in front of you? Notice the fork in your hand, is it cold to touch, warm, smooth? Taking the first bite, fully notice the texture and flavors. Do you know how many times you typically chew your food? (Fun fact: some experts say we should chew our food around 32 times before swallowing! [Cirino, 2020]). Notice how your body and stomach are feeling while eating.</image:caption>

Before starting the car, notice how you are feeling - are you wired on your morning coffee? Tired from a late night or a restless sleep? Anxious? Angry? In the car, notice yourself sitting in the seat, your hands on the steering wheel. What does the steering wheel feel like - rough, smooth, hot, cold? Is the car too warm, too cold, or just right? When driving, try to stay present, noticing both the road ahead and your surroundings. Are you playing music? Is it distracting?</image:title>

As a human being reading these words, you know very well what anger is, as you undoubtedly have felt it at least once in your life and to varying degrees. Anger can be the strong irritation one feels at a significant or minor inconvenience. Anger can be the feeling of displeasure one has when someone crosses their boundaries.</image:caption>

Does it act as an accelerant, fueling the flames of personal growth, transformation, and progress? Unfortunately, it can do all of these things and more.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Perfectionism - Who does this impact?</image:title>
<image:caption>According to a 2020 study by Vitale & Company (2024), the majority of adults in the United States—92% in fact—consider themselves “perfectionists.” While perfectionism may have its upsides, such as showcasing one’s determination, drive, high aspirations, and elevated standards, the effects of perfectionism on one’s mental health are undeniable, and the need for internal balance is rising. Another study reveals that the number of people who identify with perfectionism and perfectionistic tendencies has been steadily rising since the 1980s, with increases in rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts (American Psychological Association, 2018). With technological advancements such as smartphones, social media, VR, and AI-generated content, one can assume that this upward trend is still a significant concern if not more of one than what it was when the study ended in 2016.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Grief, waves, and the coping experience - Waves of Emotion</image:title>
<image:caption>If you’re looking for a visualization on how grief can feel, try imagining the waves of the ocean. A parallel with nature can oftentimes help us make sense of what they are going through and feeling. It can also help us feel connected in a time that might otherwise feel quite isolating. Wave sets are groups of three to ten waves that arrive at a surf break in succession. The number of waves in a set, the length, the height, and the time between each set can vary significantly. Coping with grief and loss can feel very similar. There can be unpredictability as emotions ebb and flow, rise and fall, and at times, recede all together. Sometimes it can feel manageable, and the next moment it can feel overwhelming and all-consuming. As ocean waves can shape the shore, the waves of grief can also have a lasting impact on the person who is learning to cope.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Grounding Techniques to Use During the Summer Season - What is “Grounding” and Why Practice It?</image:title>
<image:caption>Grounding is the practice of re-orienting oneself to the current, here-and-now moment when feeling like your mind is going 100 different directions all at once. When we become overwhelmed with the day’s tasks that lie ahead, quickly annoyed by the slightest inconvenience, or stuck ruminating about something we said the week before, we often have a difficult time pulling ourselves out of those troubling thoughts and feelings. When we can remember to ground ourselves, we can interrupt those thoughts and emotions that drag us back into the past or transport us into the future. Remember: we cannot control those around us when we’re overwhelmed, we can only control ourselves. In the wise words of Frozen’s summer-loving snowman, Olaf: “We’re calling this ‘controlling what you can when things feel out of control’”. Grounding exercises can help reduce anxiety, unwanted thoughts, and stress and help improve depression, PTSD symptoms, and overall well-being (Raypole, 2024).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Grounding Techniques to Use During the Summer Season - When we get overwhelmed, angry, or overstimulated, our body can heat up and our temperature increases. Here are a few ways to bring your temperature back from the “boiling” point so you can address the triggering situation more calmly and clearly. Take a cold shower Go for a swim Take a cold pack or a few ice cubes wrapped in paper towels and hold them in your hands. Gently place them on your wrists, forehead, under the eyes, and/or the back of the neck for a few seconds. Fill a bowl with water and ice and “dunk” your face into the bowl for 10 to 30 seconds (DBT Tools, 2024) If you’re outside, find some shade to sit under for a few minutes; drink cold water</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Grounding Techniques to Use During the Summer Season - 2. Use your five senses</image:title>
<image:caption>Another way to ground is to use all five of your senses. The “5-4-3-2-1” method is an easy-to-remember grounding exercise that you can use indoors and outdoors: First, find 5 items around you that you can see. Focus your attention on these items. How do they look objectively? If you catch yourself judging (that’s an ugly clock) that’s okay! But try to return to the room or the scene around you. Notice the shapes (the clock is circular) and the colors of objects (the grass is green). Next, find 4 things around or on you that you can touch. Feel the items with your hands. Notice the texture of each item without judgment (this tree trunk feels rough) Then, listen for 3 different sounds close to or far away from you (the cars passing by, the buzz of a bee, the crunch of a footstep). After listening, try to find 2 things around you to smell. Notice the scent. Focus on each. Can you describe each scent? (fresh air, flowers, a candle). Finally, find 1 thing (that’s edible!) that you can taste. Focus on the taste - is it sweet? Sour? Spicy? Does the item lack taste? Notice the absence of taste if this is the case.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Men’s Mental Health: Ending the Stigma</image:title>
<image:caption>Historically, many men have been raised and socialized in ways that prioritize behaviors and values of stoicism, mental and physical strength, and stability. These values are not inherently negative, but they can have costly effects on men and their mental health when taken to the extreme. According to Mental Health America (n.d.) more than 6 million men in the United States suffer from depression and more than 4 times as many men as women die by suicide every year. Additionally, “1 in 10 men experience depression or anxiety but less than half will receive treatment” (Anxiety & Depression Association of America [ADAA], 2024). These statistics are deeply troubling, and the reasons why men avoid seeking help when grappling with mental illness are numerous. One major reason for this is due to the fear of stigmatization - the fear of being perceived as “weak”, “different”, or an “outsider” (McKenzie et. al, 2022). When society puts you in a “box” from a young age, it can be difficult to step out of that box without fearing backlash, stigmatization, and ridicule for being anything other than the stereotypical, strong, hypermasculine male.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Men’s Mental Health: Ending the Stigma - With our technological advancements providing us with an abundance of social media and video-connecting apps, it can be as easy as a few taps on your smartphone or computer to find a support network, community, or peer, whether it's in person or online. And if you can’t find a peer group already established - you can create one! Some apps/websites that can help you find and create in-person/online peer support groups or communities are Facebook, Meetup, Discord, or Reddit*. There are so many options nowadays. And of course, nothing beats the “old-fashioned” way of naturally meeting people in person at events and get-togethers. Still, some may find that remaining anonymous affords more mental and physical comfort while trying to find a support system they can trust, in which case, the latter two options may be worth looking into. If you are comfortable doing so, joining a therapeutic support group is also a great option. If you have a therapist, feel free to ask them about groups that they know of and can refer you to.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Men’s Mental Health: Ending the Stigma - Learning More</image:title>
<image:caption>Learning something new can, at times, feel overwhelming. But, like learning anything for the first time, I’d encourage you to take it slow - however that may look for you. One step, one chapter, one podcast, one conversation at a time. Where does one start to learn about mental health and mental illness? You reading a blog post like this one! Additionally, many websites can be helpful in this regard, two of which have been mentioned previously: the National Alliance of Mental Illness and Mental Health America. Depending on what you may be experiencing personally (symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, for example) can help narrow down what you might be interested in learning more about. Your local library may offer great book options on mental health such as self-help ones on how you the reader, can cope with different symptoms or diagnoses, memoirs of individuals who have lived experience with a particular mental health diagnosis, and much more. Many educational podcasts out there can also be helpful in your learning journey.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: The History and Significance - Beck recognized that regardless of the cause of someone’s depression, once the person began feeling depressed, their thinking reflected the negative cognitive triad. He believed that this triad kept the depression going, even when the the negative thoughts were not necessarily the original cause of the depression.</image:title>
<image:caption>According to Dr. Beck, there are three aspects of cognition: Self-criticism (negative views of yourself) Pessimism (negative views of the world) Hopelessness (negative views of your future)</image:caption>

<image:caption>Cognitive therapists help clients identify measurable goals and help them find ways to achieve those goals. Clients have the opportunity to rate their moods in relation to the activities they do throughout the day. As their symptoms begin to subside, the therapist will begin to introduce additional skills. One tool that therapists use is homework, and they can give clients worksheets they can use to track and record their thoughts. We’ve attached a free one for you to download and use below! These worksheets can help identify negative automatic thoughts and test them - which is what CBT is all about.</image:caption>
